El Greco Café - A Downtown Sarasota Dining Institution

Located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, the El Greco Mediterranean Café has been serving Mediterranean cuisine in the Sarasota community for over 40 years.  Truly a Sarasota landmark, El Greco offers a simple, yet workable décor, outdoor seating and a dining room with large window views to the outside sidewalk activities.

When a restaurant has been around for such a long period of time, it is easy to overlook; instead opting for one of the newer dining venues.  Recently, we revisited El Greco and were pleasantly surprised to see the focus on value has not changed.  With a robust menu offering meat, seafood, pizza, soup and salads, El Greco is preparing both traditional and contemporary Mediterranean cuisine.  There truly is something for everyone which makes family dining at El Greco a natural choice.  For our meals we had the following:

Famous Greek Salad:  Fresh lettuce garnished with tomatoes, cucumbers, pepperoncinis, olives, beets, green peppers, onions, and feta cheese.  $7.95
Cold, crisp and fresh…one of the best in town!
Lamb Souvlaki Salad:  Char grilled lamb skewers with a Greek salad, dressing and grilled flat bread. $9.95
Lamb was very flavorful, salad was fresh, and bread was delicious. Can easily be a complete meal for a light eater.
El Greco Platter:  Chicken souvlaki skewers, spanakopita, stuffed olives, tzadziki, garnished with tomatoes, cucumber, beets and grilled pita.  $9.95
A great sampling of appetizers, perfect for 2 people to share.
Pasticcio:  Layered macaroni pasta with seasoned ground beef with a light béchamel sauce.  Served with a choice of soup or junior Greek salad.   $14.50
Nicely seasoned and presented, flavorful and filling.
Seafood Platter:  Fresh mahi-mahi, ocean scallop skewer, fresh gulf shrimp skewer, char grilled and served with roasted potatoes and vegetables.  Served with choice of soup or junior Greek Salad  $19.95
Good size portion, seafood sweet and tasty.

In addition to the above, El Greco Café offers a limited selection of beer, wine, and soft drinks to accompany your meal.  Do not care to dine out?  El Greco offers a take-out menu, which based upon the number of people picking up, is extremely popular.  We found the service to be adequate.

El Greco Mediterranean Café is not fancy, overpriced, or ostentatious but rather it is the perfect spot for a simple, flavorful, family meal.  With an emphasis on providing good food at reasonable prices in a simple manner, it stands to reason why this Sarasota landmark has been serving our community for over 40 years.

Two Dining Spots…One Locale…Well not exactly!

When you first arrive at the Crab & Fin you are faced with your 1st enjoyable choice of the dining experience; not from the extensive menu (more on that later) but rather inside or outside dining. The ambience and the experience are significantly different but the menu is not. In fact it is identical; with the exception of the Early Dining option offered for inside dining. (See SRQReviews insider tip below.)

The indoor dining with its varied rooms offers a more refined, upscale dining experience. Textured ceilings, high fans, white table linens, nicely appointed wait staff, and an impressive raw bar provide a showcase for the anticipated seafood delights.

Since the restaurant is committed to providing the freshest seafood from around the world, the menus change daily reflecting quality and availability. Even though the menu offers Grilled Pork Porterhouse, “Cowboy Cut” Ribeye, Filet Mignon, and the Half Pounder Burger, make no mistake about it; the Crab & Fin is all about the seafood! Oysters, clams, caviar, fin fish, crab and crustaceans, if it is fresh and available, chances are it is on the menu at Crab & Fin.

On our dining excursion, we chose to dine outside at the “L” shaped corner café. Since seating outdoors is open, just pick your spot and seat yourself. However be aware at times the wait staff may get an influx of diners at their station and immediate attention might be stretched. We experienced this scenario when 3 parties chose the same area at roughly the same time. The café seating is reminiscent of European or South Beach dining. Raised tile flooring, high awnings, paddle fans, wait staff dressed in Island wear and even some live music make the venue perfect for a relaxing meal “al fresco.”

Our meal consisted of the following:

Martha’s Vineyard Salad
Red leaf & bibb lettuce with bleu cheese, pinenuts, red onion, served with a raspberry vinaigrette $7.25
Service note:We asked for no onions and goat cheese vs. blue cheese and were charged an additional $1.75 to accommodate our request. We never begrudge a restaurant its fair price; however to us, this seemed like a nuisance charge.

Coconut Crusted Chicken
Served with blackened baby gulf shrimp, rum-raisin glaze and julienne vegetables. $18.00

Gulf Yellowfin Tuna
Sesame seed crusted and seared rare with ginger soy glaze, coconut jasmine rice, stir fry vegetables, and crispy noodles. $32.00

Simply put, the food presentation was outstanding and the tastes even better! If the desire for some really fresh seafood falls upon you, make your catch at the Crab & Fin. Indoors or outdoors, you decide!

Cevich is currently closed.  They are planning to move to 55 Palm Avenue.

How does dinner in a 1925 historic building sound?

Suppose this place had 4 floors of exposed brick, opened airy seating, a small outside terrace, and a rooftop bar with impressive happy hour sunsets? Not to mention an extensive menu of tapas?

If that sounds interesting, then Ceviche is the place to go. The original Ceviche, located in the Soho district of Tampa, opened in 1997. Since then, Ceviche has expanded its Florida presence to include, St. Petersburg, Orlando, and Sarasota. The Sarasota site opened in March, 2008.

The setting for Ceviche Sarasota is unique. Occupying the old Times building, Ceviche offers 2 floors of open seating for dining, a 3rd floor Flamenco lounge with a large bar, sophisticated lighting, live music, and the 4th floor roof top bar, Luna Lounge, with impressive views of downtown Sarasota and its sunsets. There is also a small outdoor dining area.

Consisting of some of the finest imported foods from Spain, the menu is not only extensive, but authentic. The wait staff suggested 2-3 plates per person. Since we were not very hungry, we ordered a total of 7 plates for 5 people. This was probably on the light side but did suffice. See the SRQ insider tip for more info on quantities to order.

A little planning on the tapas selection will allow you to try a variety of items and set up a natural flow to the arrival of plates; cold selections arriving before hot ones.

Our meal comprised the following tapas:

Garbanzo Hummus
Traditional puree of garbanzo beans, olive oil and roasted garlic, Served with toast points $5.50

Tabla Mixta
Chorizo morcilla, and Serrano ham with Mahon, Manchego, Tetilla cheeses, with sliced fruit and homemade pate $13.95

Vegtales a la Parrilla
Squash, eggplant, mushrooms and asparagus grilled and drizzled with virgin olive oil. $6.50

Ensalada de Vieiras
Sauteed day boat scallops over greens with candied walnuts and Cabralles cheese with warm bacon vinaigrette $11.50

Queso de Cabra
Baked goat cheese with tomato, fresh basil, and virgin olive oil $8.50

Banderillas Mixtas
Assortment of skewered grilled tenderloin, mild chorizo, marinated chicken and vegetables $9.50

Pato a la Parilla
Grilled duck breast, sliced over chocolate, port sauce $12.95

We completed our meal with our "tapas" beverage of choice; Sangria served with plenty of fresh cut fruit in a colorful ceramic pitcher.

All of the tapas were nicely plated and presented. We found the scallops to be inconsistent, some were undercooked others just fine. The vegtales portion too small for our group. This was our error. We should have ordered 2 plates.

If you are looking to try something new in an interesting setting with a group of people, then Ceviche in Sarasota should be on your list.

SRQ Reviews, the restaurant guide you need to find the best dining in Sarasota, Florida.

Insider Tips

Tapas dining provides the ultimate in flexibility.

We suggest ordering 1-2 unique plates for each diner, start sampling the food as it arrives, then ordering more of the dishes you especially liked, or adding a few new ones to sample if so inclined, until you feel satiated.

Please note: this is a fun and lively place without carpet or table linens to absorb the sound.

“Old Florida,” Family Friendly, Fun

An iconic, old Florida styled restaurant located on City Island, The Salty Dog is all about fun.  The City Island location (there is another Salty Dog located in Siesta Key Village) offers sweeping views of New Pass, the Longboat Key Bridge, and the Bay.  With most of its seating open-aired, The Old Salty Dog is the perfect spot to have a drink or casual meal while soaking up some sun and enjoying a great view. In fact, even on cooler days, you can get protection from the wind and still be outside soaking in the whole experience.  You can even bring your dog!

The menu is a casual collection of soups, starters, salads, sandwiches, seafood, burgers, dogs, and specialty items like the Fully Loaded Salty Dog as seen on Man vs. Food. For our meals we chose the following:

The House Salad with Grilled Grouper:  The BIG salad, romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, croutons, and grilled grouper $14.90
A large salad with very fresh ingredients.
City Island Po’ Boy:  Fried shrimp and oysters served on a toasted Ciabatta roll, garnished with lettuce and tomato and a spicy Creole sauce on the side $12.95
A good sized roll filled with crispy shrimp and sweet oysters, the Creole sauce was nicely spiced and added a true Cajun flavor.
Oysters on the Half Shell:  Raw or steamed with lemons and cocktail sauce. 1/2 dozen or full dozen/market price.
Large, briney Texas Gulf oysters served with fresh cocktail sauce; delicious.
Traditional Fish and Chips:  Filet of cold water fish, deep fried in our special beer batter.  Served with a mound of golden french fries. $12.95
Two large fish filets, crispy golden batter, moist and flaky.
New Pass Mussels:  PEI mussels steamed and tossed in garlic butter and served with toast points 1.5lbs $9.95, 3lbs. $17.95, 5lbs. $30.95
Fresh, sweet steamed mussels with a nicely seasoned garlic broth.
Mahi Mahi Wrap:  Grilled mahi mahi in a warm flour tortilla with fresh romaine, and mango salsa. $14.95
Fresh and moist mahi mahi, mango salsa added just the right amount of sweetness.
The Loaded Salty Dog:  A quarter pound hot dog dipped in beer batter deep fried to a golden brown. Loaded with all the toppings, (as seen on the Travel Channel’s Man vs Food.) American, Swiss, Cheddar and Pepper Jack cheeses, sauerkraut, bacon, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. $13.95
Certainly not health food! Incredibly decadent, layers of flavor, not your everyday dining experience but worth a try.

The Old Salty Dog serves a wide variety of special drinks, beer, wine, and soft drinks.  Service was very quick, efficient, friendly and attentive.

With a broad menu, on the water setting, and a very friendly casual atmosphere, The Old Salty Dog is a “go to” place to grab a drink and a quick bite.

Understated elegant dining in a tranquil, natural setting with stunning waterfront views…

Need we say more? Located on the southern end of Siesta Key, Ophelia’s low profile presence easily blends into the natural setting.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by the parking attendant.  While striking up a conversation, we learned he worked at Ophelia’s on the Bay for over 17 years.  This tenure, especially for a parking attendant, struck us as unusual. However, it speaks volumes about the philosophy and management of Ophelia’s.  We made a note to check the tenure of other staff and found it to be equally compelling in terms of longevity.  Interestingly, we were not only impressed by the professionalism of the staff, but most definitely felt as if any person waiting on us treated us as if they were an owner.  A characteristic we attribute to commitment, cultivated over time.  Given this initial impression, we were anxious to try the food.

Ophelia’s menu is extensive, but changes daily depending upon the availability of fresh ingredients. For our dinners, we choose the following:

Eggplant Crepes:  Mascarpone, Buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, spinach, tomato basil sauce $14.00
Light thin crepes with a silky smooth filling, a must try dish for any eggplant lover.
Assorted Spring Greens:  Caramelized pecans, watermelon radish, blueberries, cran-raisins, buffalo mozzarella, mustard vinaigrette.  $12
Fresh, wonderful combination of sweet flavors.
Genuine American Red Snapper:  Key lime poblano relish, jumbo lump blue crab guacamole, sweet potatoes $30.00
Sweet and spicy with just a subtle hint of heat mixed with the flaky texture of the snapper; a nice combination.
Wild Tasmanian King Salmon:  Warm grilled onion and tomato salad, dill emulsion, fingerling potato and vegetable hash $27.00
Sweet and firm; salmon is always a favorite.
Long Bone Ribey Chop of Veal:  Rosemary-garlic perfume,  crispy cippolini and maytag bleu salad, balsamic syrup, grana risotto.  $36
Beautiful presentation, tender, moist, perfectly prepared.
Key Lime Pie:  With whipped cream $9.00
Sweet, tart, and tangy; a great rendition of a Florida favorite.
Belgian White Chocolate Mousse:  Infused with Frangelico and Served with Fresh Berries and Fresh Whipped Cream.  $10
It actually looked sexy...And tasted delicious!

The bread service is unique. Ophelia’s on the Bay serves a fresh baked, warm bread infused with roasted garlic; absolutely delicious and a great way to start a meal. There is a good selection of domestic wines and a full bar service as well. We chose to accompany our meals with a glass of the Cleanslate 2007 Riesling and the Lodi 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ophelia’s offers something for everyone. An extensive menu, traditional or casual dining, indoor our outdoor seating, great food, served by a well tenured and customer oriented staff, who can ask for more?

Cafe Continental closed its doors on 12/31/13.  Gerald and Doreta are moving back to Europe.
The name is French…the ownership British. The food is good!

Originally located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, Café Continental Patisserie has recently moved to Siesta Drive, just east of the Trail, across the street from Dillards.  Cafe Continental serves breakfast and lunch everyday from 8am to 2pm.  Tucked inside a strip mall, Continental Café can be easily overlooked, but that would be unfortunate.  The bright setting and simple décor are part of the charm, complemented with friendly, attentive service.

Offering baked goods, tea, coffee, salads, Panini’s, and traditional English foods, the Continental Café’s menu is well suited for a casual breakfast or lunch meal.  We chose the following:

House Salad:  Hearts of romaine and tomatoes with green peppers, cucumber and onions.  All salads served with bread and home made dressings $6.99, with grilled chicken breast add $3.99.
Fresh, crispy vegetables with a good size portion of grilled chicken.
Mediterranean Tuna Melt Panini:  Tuna, lemon mayo, celery, spinach and provolone cheese.  Served with home made potato chips. $7.99
Surprisingly large portion; crispy on the outside and warm gooey on the inside…just the right balance
English Fish and Chips:  Choice of cod or haddock or basa in beer batter served with steak fries, and tartar sauce.  $12.99
Big thick piece of sweet cod fish, tasty batter, fresh peas, very English, very filling.
Huevos Rancheros:  Tortillas with refried beans, 2 eggs any style, pepper jack cheese, sliced tomatoes, with feta, Chef’s green salsa and sour cream.  $8.99
Fresh and flavorful, very authentic.
Bubble and Squeak:  Two eggs, bubble and squeak, toast or english muffin  $6.99
Eggs made exactly how I ordered them, bubble and squeak reminds me of a combination pancake, texture of grits with vegetables...I loved it!
Across the Pond - Full English Breakfast:  Two eggs, ½ grilled tomato, banger, mushrooms, bacon, served with toast or english muffin  $8.99
Hearty full sized breakfast, very filling.
Choice of scone with powdered sugar and whipped cream:  $2.75
We chose both a blueberry and mixed berry scone, it arrived hot out of the oven. Sinfully good. Perhaps the best in Sarasota.
Chicken Salad with Tomato Sandwich:  All sandwiches are served with your choice of cold side, home made potato chips, french fries or cup of soup.  $7.50
The salad was filled with chunks of chicken, the home made chips are addictive.
Polish Homemade Pierogis:  Saurerkraut and wild mushrooms with mustard dip.  $9.99
Authentically homemade, very tasty, can't wait to try another.

Café Continental offers a selection of coffee, teas, and soft drinks to accompany your meal.  (They are awaiting their beer and wine license.)  As previously mentioned, we found the staff to be very pleasant and attentive.

Is it French or is it British? Well actually it is Café Continental and the food is good.

Dinner with a sweeping view of Sarasota Bay!

Whether you arrive by car or by boat for that matter, a meal at Pattigeorge’s is memorable. A casually elegant, glass walled dining room situated dockside on Sarasota Bay, most tables have an unobstructed view of the water. However, if you prefer to dine outside, please be aware there is no water view dining option.

With its coastal locale, it is only natural to see this manifested in the cuisine.  Tommy Klauber, PG’s Chef/Proprietor offers an eclectic creative collection of coastal dishes with perhaps a slight tilt towards the Asian inspired.  With an extensive array of soups, salads, small plates, pizzas, pastas, stir fry’s, meat, and of course, seafood, making a single choice from the menu is not easy. Our meals consisted of the following:

Tommy K’s Minced Chicken & Lettuce Cups  $8.50
A very refreshing mix of subtly spiced chicken and cool crisp lettuce.
Shanghai Chili Chicken Salad:  romaine, crispy wontons, julienne tomatoes and peanut dressing  $7.75
Crisp, strong, and very flavorful.
Panko Crusted Longboat Roll:  shrimp & daikon wrapped in sushi rice and nori with ponzu dipping sauce $9.25
Crunchy with a slight hint of spice…very nice.
Pan Seared Native Snapper:  a filet of snapper served over an arugula and warm red and yellow tomato salad  $29.75
A great combination of fresh fish and salad, nice textures, colors, and flavors.
Miso Galzed Chilean Sea Bass:  lobster consomme, fresh fennel and carrots  $35.25
Pattigeorge's signature dish, subtle flavors, rich, delicous.

There is a full bar and an ample list of beer and wine from which to choose. We chose the Brampton Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa  to accompany our meal.

If you find yourself longing for waterfront dining and want a sophisticated menu from which to choose might we suggest Pattigeorge’s?  Coastal cuisine with an awesome view!

Mediterranean cuisine with a “bird’s-eye” view on St. Armands Circle.

One of the fun things to do in Sarasota’s St. Armands Circle is people watch.  St Armands Circle offers a variety of outdoor cafes and alfresco dining which only add to the people watching enjoyment.

Located on the 2nd floor in the heart of St. Armands is Terrace on the Circle.  A simple silver and red contemporary décor with glass fronted walls and an open aired terrace, Terrace on the Circle is the perfect spot to escape the hustle/ bustle of the sidewalk level yet still have the perfect view of all the happenings on the Circle.

Offering a casually oriented breakfast and lunch menu, Terrace on the Circle’s selections are extensive regardless of your meal of choice.  Even though there is an emphasis on Middle Eastern cuisine, there are many options available for all diners. We were having lunch and chose the following:

Greek Salad:  Fresh greens with feta cheese, tomato, Greek peppers, olives, onions and cucumber tossed with Greek dressing. $9.50
Crisp and fresh, nicely dressed served with fresh Syrian bread.
House Salad:  Lettuce, tomato, cucumber and onion with choice of dressings.  $5.00
A great value, big fresh salad, plenty of veggies.
Falafel:  Ground, fried chickpeas topped with tomato, parsley, mint, radish and tahini sauce.  $9.00
Nicely presented, long oval dish with cut-up pancake-shaped falafel.  Fresh veggies and tahini give it a more flavorful taste.
Kafta:  Grilled skewers of ground sirloin mixed with onion, parsley, and Lebanese spices.  $14.00
A tender and flavorful presentation; very satisfying.

Select meals are served with fresh Syrian bread.  There is a small beer and wine list to accompany your meal.  Even though it was busy, we found the service to be prompt, friendly, and attentive.

Although Terrace on the Circle’s location may not be obvious upon your first visit, it is located above Cha Cha Coconuts and Columbia Restaurant on St Armands Circle and worth seeking.  Nice views, open aired dining, good food, friendly staff and reasonable prices, who can ask for more?  Terrace on the Circle, an oasis on St. Armands Circle.

Lunch anyone?

The third Word of Mouth restaurant is located in the former Metro Café space at 711 S. Osprey Avenue. We had heard and read mixed reviews of the Word of Mouth (WOM) restaurants and decided it was time to weigh in with our opinion.

Since WOM is known for their breakfast and lunch, we chose to visit the restaurant for lunch.

Offering a full selection of salads, wraps, sandwiches and paninis making a single choice is no simple matter. We chose the following:

Grilled Chicken Panini: Marinated chicken tenders, fresh mozzarella, tomato, red onion, and tarragon mayo, on freshly baked ciabbata bread $7.99
Chicken Salad Sandwich: Build your own-Choice of bread-white, wheat, rye, fresh baked 7 grain, lettuce, tomato, alfalfa sprouts, onions, cucumber, or bean sprouts; served with pickle and chips $6.99

Although the wait for our sandwiches was a little longer than expected, we were in no rush. The wait staff was friendly and attentive checking back frequently on our drink status. When the food did arrive, we found the sandwiches well prepared, fresh, and tasty. The portion size was just right for a lunch time meal. We were able to leave satisfied, but not overly full; ready to work through the afternoon.

Tandoor Fine Indian Cuisine: The name says it all...

Originally located on Clark Road, Tandoor has been serving authentic Indian cuisine to Sarasota’s spice seekers and Indian-cuisine aficionados for more than 12 years. With a recent move to the University Town Center area, which incidentally has recently become a small-restaurant mecca, Tandoor is poised to accommodate the ever-increasing popularity of the area.
With a glass-front retail-like entrance, mirrored wall and rectangular-shaped divided dining room, the physical space appears large, but it’s not overpowering. Simply and tastefully decorated, the restaurant’s dining room is casual and comfortable and can easily accommodate large or small parties.
As one might expect, the menu at Tandoor is extensive, offering a wide range of traditional Indian dishes, appetizers, curries, breads and, of course, Tandoor specialties. There’s also a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan items. For our meals we chose the following:
House Salad:  Healthy greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and onions, tossed with a lemon dressing.  $5.00
A generously sized portion for $5, consisting of fresh iceberg and romaine lettuce the salad included refreshing dressing with a little kick — a great way to start your meal.
Stuffed Naans:  Stuffed with your choice of aloo (potato), onions, chili or cheese.  $4.00
We chose aloo. We love naan, and the potatoes added a soft, silky-smooth texture with a creamy taste.
Vegetable Somosa:  Crisp, pyramid-shaped pastries stuffed with mildly spiced potatoes and peas (2 pcs). $5.00
A very nice, dry crust, creamy and mild.
Meat Somosa:  Crisp, pyramid-shaped pastries stuffed with minced lamb and peas (2 pcs.)  $6.00
Also a nice, dry outer crust with a nicely textured rich filling.
Onion Bhaji:  Sliced onions dipped in light, spicy chickpea flour batter and deep fried.  $5.00
The Indian version of the onion ring — lightly battered, sweet and flavorful.
Chicken Makhani: (Butter Chicken):  House favorite! White chicken cubes marinated over night, then roasted in the Tandoor and folded into a rich, creamy tomato sauce. A Northern Indian Specialty. Served over rice, we chose medium spice.  $15.00 Indian comfort food, buttery, tender pieces of chicken; bright, flavorful and not too spicy. Creamy deliciousness.
Tikka Masala:
Marinated in a special mixture of tandoori red spices and yogurt and roasted slowly in the tandoor – the clay oven. The tikka is then cooked in a rich and creamy mildly spiced masala sauce (add $1.00).  $16.00
Rich and creamy layers of flavor with tender chunks of soft, tender chicken; my mouth is watering just typing this.
Saag:  The most popular dish in Punjab, India. Fresh spices cooked in a creamy and flavorful spinach gravy. Chicken  $15.00
Served with rice. Big chunks of chicken. Mildly flavored.
Vindaloo:  A blend of spicy masalas cooked in a tomato-based curry with potatoes and served over rice. We chose lamb.  $16.00
Traditionally a spicy dish, we had the lamb prepared with medium spice, and it was hot! We enjoy spicy food, so it was fine for us, but if you prefer less spice, be forewarned on this dish.

Tandoor offers a very good selection of beer, wine and soft drinks to accompany your meal. The waitstaff was very friendly, fast, efficient, knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the dishes or making recommendations on amounts to order or on spiciness. These server attributes are a must for the Indian-cuisine novice who might need assistance navigating the menu options.
Looking for a culinary exploration? Many people consider Indian cuisine to be too exotic or spicy for their palates. However, traditional Indian cuisine offers a wide range of foods, preparations and spiciness. Tandoor is no exception; it’s the perfect place for the Indian-cuisine novice and connoisseur to dine together. Try it; I think you will be pleased.

When you are in downtown Sarasota and want to dine someplace different, check out Pho Cali Vietnamese Noodle House!

Upon entering Pho Cali one is immediately struck by the “hustle bustle” of the seemingly small number of staff. Tables situated close together, all filled with diners; people waiting in a small area not sure to give their name or take a number for seating.  (Both systems being used the night we arrived.)  Glass topped tables quickly cleaned while satisfied guests leave with their “doggie bags” in hand informing us it is worth the wait!  And from our perspective it was.

After a short wait we were seated and immediately immersed in the details of an extensive menu.  Water glasses were quickly filled and our drink order taken.  Upon presenting our drinks the waiter was ready for our order.  Even though there was a short amount of time to discuss our intended selections, it was enough and we did not feel rushed.  This was efficiency in action!  We placed our order and anticipated the beginning of our food adventure.  As expected, the food arrived in an equally timely matter.  It became quite clear how this restaurant was able to keep the flow of diners moving in and out.

Our meals consisted of the following:

House Special Appetizer/Khai Vj Dac Biet: Combination of 2 egg rolls, 2 spring rolls, and 4 crispy shrimp rolls.  Served with house sauce and peanut sauce. $9.95
Crispy rolls, very fresh spring rolls, and tasty dipping sauces
Pho Ga: Vietnamese beef noodle soup, sliced white meat chicken, topped with scallion, onion, and cilantro. Served with bean sprouts, fresh basil, lime, and jalapeno peppers $7.95
Generous portions, lots of noodles and tender chicken
Roasted Duck: Half roasted duck served with steamed vegetabels, steamed rice, and duck sauce. $14.95
The duck was moist, tender, and cleaved into small pieces, the veggies were colorful and steamed to crispy perfection

We complemented our meals with a Vietnamese beer (Saigon) which was light and tasty. Selections of beer and wine are adequate but limited.

A simple, casual, “go to spot” for breakfast or lunch!

Everyone needs a “go to spot” for breakfast or lunch.  You know, the kind of place where all the food is good, the prices reasonable, and the service friendly and attentive.  The type of place which makes you feel right at home.

We were introduced to the Oasis Café by friends who had it as one of their “go to spots” for breakfast.  Offering an array of breakfast and lunch items, home made pastries and daily specials listed on the blackboard, there is definitely something for everyone.  In fact, making a selection at times can be difficult because everything is so good.  Nonetheless, we chose the following:

Huevos Rancheros: Scrambled eggs with chorizo, onions, potatoes, black beans, and cheddar, in a flour tortilla shell.  $10.00
A nice mix of flavors and texture, very filling
Mel's Favorite: Spinach mushrooms and feta cheese scrambled with 2 eggs.  Served with fruit and toast.  $8.95
A nice blend of mild flavors from the spinach and mushrooms and the creamy texture of the feta.
Healthy Bear Creek Pancakes:  Whole grain pancakes with oats, cornmeal and spices.  We added granola, banana, and blueberries.  $7.00 plain, $8.50 with add ins
Hearty, seemingly healthy pancakes, so good it could be dessert!
Breakfast Wrap:  Scrambled eggs, veggies, black beans, roasted red pepper, hummus and cheddar served with fruit.  $9.00
A great combination of flavors and textures; although billed as a special it could be made to order any time.
Blueberry and Lemon Scone:  $2.00
Fresh and dry, not too sweet, subtle flavor.
Low Fat Yogurt Sundae: With house-made granola and fruit.  $6.50
The fruit was fresh and the granola was “the real deal.”  Yummy.

The Oasis Café offers a range of soft drinks, coffee, and tea to accompany your meal. The service is fast, friendly, and efficient. We noticed the regulars being greeted by the wait staff, as were our friends, when we arrived. In fact, the waitress knew exactly what our friends wanted right down to their smallest substitutions; impressive!

As I mention earlier, everyone needs a “go to” list, we just added the Oasis Café on Osprey Avenue to our breakfast and lunch list. If you try it, I am sure you will consider adding to your list as well.

Bella Nonna recently closed.
Bella Nonna’s Bistro: A pizza place puzzler....

In business for a little longer than two years, Bella Nonna’s Bistro is an enigma for me.  The first part of this puzzle is the name and its potential connotations.  If one were to apply the traditional definition of bistro (a small, modest café or restaurant), I would say, “Yes, that works for me.” However, today, many associate the word with a more upscale dining experience.  Located in the Indian Beach Plaza, across Tamiami Trail from the Ringling College of Art and Design, Bella Nonna’s Bistro is a small, casual-dining pizza place.  The restaurant’s charm comes from its über-casual ambience.

The second piece of this puzzle is the menu.  Like many other pizza places, Bella Nonna’s offers a range of specialty thin-crust pizzas, calzones, stromboli, and hot and cold sandwiches. However, Bella Nonna’s also offers a range of fresh salads, appetizers, soups, chicken, shrimp, mussels and pastas, many of which are made from multi-generational homemade recipes.  For our meals, we chose the following:

Hail Caesar:  Our traditional Caesar salad included crisp romaine hearts, shaved parmesan, Nonna’s croutons and Caesar dressing.  $5.95
A generous portion for the price; fresh, crunchy, creamy cheesy flavor.
Mabel’s Favorite:  Fresh field greens, iceberg lettuce, garbanzo beans, sun dried tomatoes, cranberries, cucumbers, sunflower seeds, carrots, kalamata olives, shredded mozzarella and Nonna’s croutons.  $7.50
Fresh, colorful and chock-full of all the ingredients, this is a great combination of textures and flavors. No skimping here.
Caprese Stuzzichino:  Fresh mozzarella and vine ripe tomatoes topped with basil, imported olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. Served with Italian bread.  $5.95
This appetizer holds promise, but the dish was disappointing. The cheese was too cold and did not seem fresh. The basil was present, but lacked its fresh punch.
The Pope:  Classic Italian, loaded with Capicola, hard salami, pepperoni, aged provolone, shredded lettuce, vine ripe tomato, sliced red onion and spicy Italian pepper relish on grilled Italian bread.  $8.50
A very nice version of the Italian classic, loaded with filling. The bread was toasted but a bit soggy from the relish, but honestly I like it that way. A spicy vinegar flavor prevails.
Marco Pollo:  Nonna’s version of the traditional chicken parmesan. Mozzarella-and-prosciutto-stuffed chicken breast, lightly breaded, baked and topped with mozzarella and marinara. Served on grilled ciabatta bread.  $7.95
An interesting twist to the traditional chicken parm — tender chicken, perfectly melted cheese and a sweet marinara topping. Very good.
Papa Perry’s Pizza Pie:  Ground pepperoni (to order), house-made sausage, green bell peppers and onions. Small $17.95 Large $19.95
This was an outstanding pizza. Thin crust baked to perfect crispy consistency, many ingredients fine-chopped and distributed over the pie, and a Nonna’s large-sized pizza is larger than most.
Mediterranean Pizza:  Traditional style pizza topped with artichokes, kalamata olives, red onions, sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese.  Small $17.95, Large $19.95
Yet again, another great pizza experience. Delicious.
Mediterranean Chicken:  Sautéed chicken breast, kalamata olives, red onions, artichokes, capers and tomatoes tossed with ziti pasta.  $11.95 (All entrees served with fresh Italian bread, add $1.95 for a small garden salad.)
Ordered the salad — deal of the year! The entree was an ample portion, with many levels of flavors and textures.
Pasta Bella Nonna’s:  This fourth-generation family recipe is a slow-simmer (12 hours) tomato sauce including pork, imported sausage, meatballs, Italian cheeses and fresh herbs, served over rigatoni pasta.  $12.95
The hearty, rich red sauce was a tad spicy, but full of slow-cooked flavor. Meatballs were a tad firm but acceptable; sausage was sweet with a nice fennel flavor.

Bella Nonna’s offers a small wine list, beer, and soft drinks to accompany your meal.  The service staff is casual and efficient; often alternating between dine-in and take-out customers. Although this looks like a fast, casual restaurant, there is some wait for your order.  However, wait times for our meals were very acceptable.

Bella Nonna’s Bistro is serving a niche in the casual restaurant market.  Although billed as a bistro, I truly see it as a pizza place “on steroids.”  The décor is modest and not necessarily conducive to quiet dining.  Even though the restaurant is very casual, Bella Nonna’s offers some of the best pizza in Sarasota, but that is not all.  The sandwiches are good, salads fresh, and the pastas very tasty.  Thinking of a great-value place to eat in or take out?  Check out Bella Nonna’s; it’s perfectly suited for quick dining and/or take out.

Dine-mark™
noun
1. A special mark of distinction, recognizing a restaurant’s quality, unique characteristics, and longevity

If there is one restaurant in Sarasota which deserves a dine-mark, it has to be the Phillippi Creek Restaurant & Oyster Bar.  In the “Old Florida Tradition”, The Creek offers a genuine, very casual, family oriented, waterside dining experience in a rustic setting.  With indoor and outdoor dining areas and a new Tiki Bar, the Creek is large; however, the configuration makes the space feel smaller and personal.

The menu at the Creek is large and extensive.  Although there are non-seafood items such as salads, burgers, chicken, and pasta; make no mistake this menu is about fresh seafood and plenty of it!  With multiple types of preparation, the seafood is prepared just the way you like it.

For our meals we had the following:

Oysters on the Half Shell:  Market Price.  $10.00 ½ dozen
Fresh shucked gulf oysters, creamy and full of liquor.
Wahoo Ceviche Cones:  Key lime juice, sriracha, cilantro, ginger, garlic, salt, blue corn tortilla cones.  $8.95
A terrific presentation, fresh, crisp, refreshing. Very creative.
House Salad:  $5.50
Fresh, big portion, carrots, peas, cucumber, red cabbage.  A perfect way to start the meal.
Florida Cobb Salad:  Crispy grouper bits, applewood smoked bacon, egg, avocado, mango, Maytag bleu, Valencia orange vinaigrette.  $13.95
A great combination of flavors, colors, and textures…very fresh and filling.
Calypso Salmon Salad:  Tomatoes, cucumber, green beans, chick peas, sweet plantain, Key West vinaigrette.  $13.95
Plentiful, fresh, the soy sauce honey glaze on the moist salmon was delicious.
Grilled Tilapia Santa Fe Salad:  Grilled pineapple, black bean salsa, avocado, queso blanco, tortillas, roasted vinaigrette.  $13.95
The fish was fresh, moist and sweet; the salad was flavorful.
Grouper Ruben Sandwich (Special):  English cheddar, chipolte aioli, crispy potato wedges.  $13.95
A creative interpretation of an “old Florida” classic, a great mix of flavors, moist, and mouth filling, served on a soft warm bun.
Seafood Kabob:  Shrimp, grouper, lobster, with teriyaki pineapple topping. Served with choice of french fries, baked potato or rice, with hush puppies and coleslaw.  $19.95
Veggies were firm and crisp, the grouper was amazingly sweet, shrimp and lobster fresh and moist.
Ahi Tuna Special:  Charbroiled or blackened.  $21.95
This piece of tuna was fresh, cooked to temperature, and very flavorful. My mouth waters just writing this description.
Creek Combo Pot for 2:  Each pot contains 2 dozen oysters, ½ lb. of shrimp, 2 ears of fresh corn, onions, celery, and fresh baked garlic bread with a choice of toppings (Snow Crab, Stone Crab Claws, Alaskan King Crab, ½ sea scallops.  Market Price
A large pot filled with sweet, delectable steamed seafood, a great mix of flavors, meant to be eaten with your hands! Finger licking goodness.
Key Lime Pie:  $5.95
If you like your key lime pie tart...this is the place to have it!  Good graham cracker crust.

Phillippi Creek Restaurant & Oyster Bar offers a full bar service, wide selection of beers and wines and, of course, soft drinks.  We found the wait staffs to be very friendly, quick, efficient, and attentive making the dining experience pleasurable.

We are often asked “Where can we get good seafood in Sarasota?” The answer is simple, Phillippi Creek Restaurant & Oyster Bar, for a taste of “Old Florida” in a rustic, family friendly, waterside setting. Get your Grouper on at “The Creek.”

New Place, New Concept, Longtime Culinary Team

For over a decade, longtime Sarasota chef/owners Ryan Boeve and Arthur Lopes (Zoria, Main Street Oyster Bar) were an integral part of the Sarasota dining community.  After a brief hiatus, both are back opening a new restaurant, Pomona which is located at 481 North Orange Avenue in Citrus Square.

Although the Citrus Square building is new, there is a certain old world charm and character which is the perfect setting for an upscale wine bar and bistro.  Warm colored walls with framed mirrors, high ceilings, dark wood, framed doors and large windows, white and black table linens, colorful orchids, and an outdoor courtyard with tremendous potential, Pomona creates an intimate dining environment.

Providing a balance between meat and seafood, the menu offers a reasonable selection of small plates, salads, main dishes, and desserts including a nice selection of cheese.  As one would expect, there is a range of wines to complement the food.  For our meals we chose the following:

Bistro Salad:  Mixed greens, house vinaigrette  $6.00
Fresh, crisp greens, lightly dressed, refreshing.
Duck Confit Salad:  Crispy duck confit, frisee, quail eggs, mustard vinaigrette  $11.00
Simply amazing, the duck was moist, crispy, cooked to perfection fall off the bone delicious.
Sea Scallops:  With butternut squash ravioli, browned sage butter  $16/$25
Large, caramelized, sweet scallops with sweet squash ravioli, lick the plate good.
Veal Stew:  “En croute pain”  $19.00
A savory crust, warm rich stock full of pieces of veal and diced vegetables, perfect for a cool night dinner.
Maple and Mascarpone Cheesecake:  $8.00
Rich, but light in texture, sweet and indulgent, the perfect punctuation to a great meal.
Napoleon of Fresh Berries:  $8.00
A crisp wafer with layered berries, light and fresh, another perfect way to end a meal.

The wait staff was friendly, professional, attentive and personable which makes a pleasant meal even better.

In Roman mythology, Pomona was the goddess of plenty, particularly referring to the abundance of fruit.  Aptly named, Pomona offers an abundance of choice for its diners and should bear fruit for chef/owners Boeve and Lopes.

Chutney's: dual cuisines, single restaurant...

For those of us who crave real ethnic food on a regular basis, Sarasota has a range of offerings from which to choose.  True, some ethnic cuisines are underrepresented in town, while others seem ubiquitous.  However, on balance, Sarasota does offer a diversity of ethnic dining options.

One unique and creative dining option that has fulfilled Sarasota’s ethnic food cravings for over 25 years is Chutney’s.  Located on Hillview Street, Chutney’s is the culinary combination of husband-and-wife team Ash Shukla and Denise May.

With an emphasis on Middle Eastern and Indian cuisines, Chutney’s offers a diverse array of dining options on its menu.  In fact, the dinner menu is divided into two distinct sections: one offering a selection of Middle Eastern and Greek dishes, the other offering a range of Indian specialties, curries and vegetarian options. For our meals we chose the following:

Middle Eastern Platters
Create your own dinner by selecting two different Middle Eastern dishes. Your meal is accompanied by a Greek salad and hand-made pita. Combo Platter $14.95
Lamb Kabob: Lean cubes of lamb marinated, grilled and served on a skewer.
One skewer of thinly-sliced, tender, mouthwatering lamb, full of flavor.
Mousakka: A Greek casserole with layers of roasted eggplant and seasoned mushrooms, topped with an egg custard and baked to perfection.
If you like eggplant, you will love this mousakka: sweet, moist and earthy, a real Middle Eastern comfort food.
Spanakopita: Layers of filo pastry filled with feta cheese, spinach and our secret spices, then baked.
This was so delicious, flaky, tangy and full of richness … a real pleaser.
Pastichio: A Greek style casserole. There are several versions, just ask for the daily special.
We had ground chicken with baked mashed potatoes. It was a hearty, full-flavored casserole, a simple combination of flavors and textures.

Indian Platters
Create your own dinner by selecting two different Indian dishes. Your meal is accompanied by Basmati rice, Greek salad and hand-made pita. Vegetarian Combo Platter $14.95. Mixed Combos $16.95. Two Meat Choices Combos $18.95.
Lamb Vindaloo: Spicy chunks of lamb in a fiery hot and sour gravy with red pepper, coriander seeds and a splash of vinegar.
This dish is not for the faint of heart. Rich, spicy and full of fiery flavor … I like spicy food and this pushed my limits! My mouth is watering as I type this.
Chicken Makhani: Grilled chicken pieces in a velvety tomato cream sauce with fresh cilantro.
Such a great combination of fresh flavors in a silky smooth sauce.
Chicken Masala: Chicken pieces in a rich tomato curry with caramelized onions and a blend of Indian spices.
One of the original dishes and a true classic … spicy, but not overpowering. Great flavors.
Saag Aloo: Spinach and potato stir-fry with minced garlic, ginger and whole coriander seeds.
Presented like a quiche or pie. If you like coriander, you will enjoy this.
Bread Pudding:  $6.00
Delicious. Light, not overly sweet. Simply outstanding! One of the best in Sarasota. Certainly can become addictive.

The bread and salad that accompany this meal are noteworthy.  The pita is soft and delicately delicious, while the salad is bold and distinctively Greek with feta and a flavorful herb dressing.  Chutney’s offers an adequate selection of beer, wine and soft drinks to complement your meal.  The wait service was fast, efficient and friendly.

The question remains: are Middle Eastern (Greek in particular) and Indian cuisines similar?  My short answer is no.  Although there may be some cross-over between the cuisines in the use of ingredients, lamb being one example, the preparations, spices and presentations of the respective dishes are significantly different. However, Chutney’s seems to make this unique culinary cohabitation work seamlessly, consistently and creatively.  With a simple yet warm décor, one is invited to explore widely varied cuisine in a welcoming, friendly setting.  A simple idea, well-executed.

If two is better than one, then Chutney’s creative menu of two ethnic cuisines in one locale is just right!

A Casual Beachy Feel with Serious Food and Reasonable Prices

The Cottage, located in the village of Siesta Key, is a small, casual, nautically styled restaurant. Offering 3 distinct dining areas: front deck/porch, wood paneled indoor dining room, and the backyard patio.  The Cottage projects a definite “I am on vacation!” feel; very relaxing. However, do not be fooled by the laid back attitude and assume the food is your typical beach bar basic.  It is not!

The Cottage's menu is innovative and has a creative style of blending various ingredients, spices, and cuisines that are apparent throughout the menu.  It is a Peruvian influenced menu, The Cottage offers a range of appetizers, salads, Ceviche, shellfish, sandwiches, and entrees.  The menu does offer something for everyone; however it is ideal for those of us that like to try a number of items and share.  For our meals we chose the following:

Cottage House Chopped Salad:  Spring mix and romaine lettuce with tomato, onion, avocado, cuzco corn, black beans and queso fresco with orange honey chipotle vinaigrette.  $9.99, add 5 shrimp $4.00
Large portion, very flavorful, mixture of textures, delicious.
Teriyaki Mahi Mahi Sliders:  Garnished with slaw, pickled ginger and wasabi mayo.  $12.99
Fresh and flavorful, a great combination of flavors.
Siesta Fiesta Caesar Salad:  Romaine lettuce, manchego, red onions, and plantains with rocotto dressing.  $9.99
Very fresh, a large portion offering a nice mix of flavor and textures.
Mixed Ceviche:  Fresh fish, shrimp, mussels, and octopus in Cottage yellow pepper lime juice with cilantro, red onions, cuzco corn skewer, and cancha and yam.  $14.99
Deliciously fresh, citrusy, with nice texture; summertime at its best.
Steamed Calms:  Eastern little necks $11.99
A delightful alternative to the longneck softer shell steamer, firm and briny, very nice.

The wait staff was very friendly, fast, and attentive.  The Cottage offers a full bar service, beer wine, and soft drinks.  In addition to the fine food and drink, Happy Hour is offered Monday through Friday 12-7pm with live music nightly.

If you are looking for a fun, relaxed, easy going type of place with some really interesting food, look no further than The Cottage.

Great composition, artistic presentation, and a romantic décor put the food at this Italian restaurant on center stage!

Even though Italian cuisine is one of the most popular in America, opening an Italian restaurant in Sarasota takes a certain amount of courage.  Perhaps due to this popularity, there is an abundance of Italian restaurants in Sarasota.  So, how does an Italian eatery distinguish itself from all the others?

Aptly named, Puccini’s Italian restaurant, with its operatic theme is creating a niche for itself amongst the Italian restaurants of Sarasota.  Having successfully run an Italian restaurant in Philadelphia for 10 years, chef/owner Richard is now bringing his love of food and music to Sarasota.

Upon arrival our first impression was “yet again another Florida strip mall eatery.”  However, one step inside and all preconceived thoughts of a strip mall dining disappeared. Ceiling’s draped in fabric, opera music playing in the background, small cozy tables, candle lit ambience, an open aired kitchen, and a warm friendly greeting made for a remarkable transformation.  The stage was set.

Puccini’s specializes in fresh, made to order dishes.  Therefore, the menu is limited and changes frequently.  For our meals we chose the following:

Sausage and peppers:  Sweet Italian sausage and green peppers $7.00
Well prepared, nicely spiced sausage with crisp colorful green peppers
Mussels in a Tomato Basil Broth: Fresh mussels cooked and served in a light tomato broth $7.00
A nice sized portion of plump, juicy mussels with a flavorful broth that is definitely bread dipping worthy.
Baked Portobello Mushrooms with Parmesan: Baby “bellas” baked and sprinkled with parmesan $5.00
Plump and moist with just the right amount of chess for flavor
Roasted Chicken in Rosemary and Fresh Tomatoes: $18.00
Good portion, moist chicken, tomatoes, string beans, nicely spiced
Fettuccine Puccini: Fettuccine served with shrimp and scallops in  a light herb sauce  $14.00
Fresh, light, tasty, cooked al dente

All meals include a simple, yet flavorful, green salad, a small simple starter, and fresh, crusty bread service.  We found all the food to be flavorful, well presented and apportioned.

Setting itself apart form other Italian restaurants in Sarasota, Puccini’s Italian restaurant, something different in Sarasota.

Fabulously French food fit for "foodies"!

Located on Longboat Key, in one of the more unlikely spots for a high-end, fine dining French restaurant, Maison Blanche completely sets itself apart.  A simple sign and unassuming presence welcomes you upon arrival.  One step inside the restaurant and a stunning transformation takes place.  A white curtained dining room, leather chairs, white table linens, hardwood floors, sleek modern bathrooms, and impressive flower arrangements set the stage for a gastronomic show.

A European styled menu offering a selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts one is not overwhelmed by choice.  However making a selection is not easy, because every item sounds exceptional.  Clearly the chef/owner, Jose Martinez is focused on making the dining experience one to remember.  Although it was not an easy decision, we chose the following:

Mesclun Salad:  field greens with fresh herbs, pine nuts, cilantro, and shaved parmesan cheese $10.00
Fresh and flavorful with the right amount of crunch from the pine nuts.
Tomato Tart:  baked and served with basil juice. $15.00
Surprisingly sweet and fresh tomato taste; outstanding.
Mediterranean Sea Bass:  roasted, served with baby spinach and menuniere sauce.  $35.00
Fish is silky smooth, subtle flavors and unusual pairings of spices; nice blend of flavors and texture.
European Sea Bass:  pan-fried with braised fennel. $30.00
A silky, flaky fish complemented by the subtle texture and flavor of the fennel; a great combination.
Chocolat Warm Cake:  caramel sauce and topped with yogurt sorbet. $12.00
Warm, sweet moist cake contrasted by the yogurt sorbet; “plate licking” delicious.
Apple Tart:  very fine layers with brown sugar and apple sorbet. $12.00
Classic tart, flaky sweet and full of flavor.

In true European style, we were provided small “extra” tastes compliments of the chef between courses; a very nice touch. Additionally, Maison Blanche has an extensive wine list from which to choose your perfect pairing to accompany the fine food.

Although Chef/Owner Jose Martinez hails from France and had restaurants in Paris and the south of France for a number of years, the menu is not classic French. Using classic French culinary techniques, adjusting for American tastes, and using sauces and seasonings to enhance the essence of the food, Jose Martinez, the James Beard Award nominated chef, consistently produces some of the finest dishes in Sarasota and dare I say all of Florida. Flavorful, tastefully presented, subtly seasoned the style is most definetly updated European; no heavy sauces here!

Fabulously French, high-end sophisticated gourmet dining, expensive, but worth every cent! Maison Blanche, a fine dining experience defined.

Café Americano: New dinner menu; same great location...

Located in the heart of downtown Sarasota, near the Five Points rotary on Main Street, Café Americano is ideally situated for dining before or after any downtown activity. With its high ceilings, contemporary décor and indoor and outdoor seating, the restaurant has created a slightly sophisticated, upscale dining space — the perfect spot for a light meal, glass of wine, dinner or coffee.

This potent combination of locale and décor raises a diner’s expectations on the meal to follow. People expect the quality of the food served in a restaurant to be commensurate or better than the setting and décor. Although not disappointing, I would put my past experiences with Café Americano in the category of “underachievement.” The food was average, with few stand-out items on the menu.

Under new ownership in the past year, Café Americano has reworked, updated and upgraded its breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The changes and improvements were a bit overdue, but certainly welcomed. We recently sampled a number of items from the new dinner menu. Here’s what we tasted:

Meatballs of the Day (2):  Homemade with marinara sauce.  $6.95
The choice for the day was pork. As I used my fork to cut the large meatball in half, I knew it was the real thing. Tender, with wafting aromas of parsley, onions, cheese and marinara sauce filling your personal dining space. Delicious.
Meat and Cheese Board:  Served with fresh-baked bread and accompaniments.  $10.95
A wonderfully presented plate of goodness. So much more than expected. Carefully sliced meat and cheese, slightly salty and delicious. Accompanied by plump caper berries, olives and stuffed peppers. The olives and peppers are house brined and the peppers are stuffed with goat cheese.
Mediterranean Chopped Salad:  Salami, provolone, mortadella, chickpeas, Parmesan, red onion, tomatoes and chopped romaine.  $10.95
Avery generous size, and one of my favorite salads. It can easily be a meal on its own or be shared as a starter. All ingredients were fresh, colorful and full of flavor.
Chopped Greek Salad:  With chopped romaine, feta cheese, black olives, tomatoes, cucumber, oregano and fresh mint.  $10.95
Once again, a very generous sized salad. The lemon-based dressing added a very fresh acidic flavor coupled with the mint. It tasted like summer in the Greek Isles. A definite winner!
The Vegetarian:  Gluten-free pasta with fresh tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant and smoked mozzarella.  $13.95
The vegetables can vary, depending on what is available fresh. For gluten-free pasta, this dish was quite good. It was tossed in an olive oil and light garlic sauce. The smoked mozzarella added depth of flavor.
Braised Lamb Shank:  With parmesan white polenta.  $19.95
Outstanding! The meat was so tender it just fell off the bone. Very rich with a slightly gamey taste, as one would expect. The herbs come through in the marinara sauce and the sweetness of the polenta created layers of flavor..
Roasted Chicken:  One half all natural free-range chicken with pan sauce on the side, mashed cauliflower and grilled asparagus.  $18.95
Fall-off-the-bone tender. Very moist with great roasted color. Nice subtle herb flavors; a comfort-food dinner for sure.
Panna Cotta:  Served with caramel.  $7.00
A light, creamy custard — smooth and not too sweet. A nice finish to a meal.
Pistachio and Ricotta Donuts:  With orange blossom honey.  $7.00
Dense, sweet and delicious; a must-have signature dish if I ever saw one!

White sand beach, green-blue water, gentle rolling waves, a setting sun…an outstanding view enhanced by fine food and drink. Got the picture? That is The Beach Bistro located surfside on Anna Maria Island.

The favorite restaurant of friends, we were invited one Sunday evening to join them for dinner at The Beach Bistro. This was a welcomed invitation not only for the company we shared but their expert orientation and expectation setting prior to our arrival at the restaurant.  We were informed by others and confirmed this evening not to expect much from the outside of the restaurant. Upon our arrival we saw an unassuming simple beachfront building with a parking lot and valet parking, “check.”

Our hosts also suggested table selection when making a reservation to be important factor. In fact, when the reservations were made a specific table request was made at the same time.  Offering spectacular views of the beach, the Gulf of Mexico, and the sun setting, we clearly understood the value of being seated slightly back from the windows with the ability to absorb the ambience from inside and outside the restaurant, “check.”

The menu at The Beach Bistro can be overwhelming.  There are many choices and various options which require some time more than the traditional restaurant menu.  It was suggested by our hosts to try the small plates vs. the full entrees.  In so doing, one would be able to sample a greater culinary fare and not be disappointed, “check # 3.”  In dining at The Beach Bistro we selected the following:

One Helluva Soup:  Bistro blue tomato seasoned parrish plum tomatoes with sweet cream and maytag blue cheese. $11.00
Rich, creamy, and silky smooth with just a little “bite”
Warm Maple Leaf Duckling Salad with Arugula & Watercress:  Warmed with a cognac, citrus-bacon vinaigrette. With apples, red onions, mangos and candied walnuts. $16.00
Award winning, delicious, could be a meal onto itself
Bangers & Mash:  Bistro chef-made lamb and tenderloin sausage with chef’s mash and three pepper demi-glace  $15.00
Not your typical pub grub, rich and flavorful
Florribbean Grouper, a Bistro Cookery Classic:  Gulf grouper with a toasted coconut and cashew crust.  Pan seared, oven finished and caressed with a red pepper papaya jam.  $24.00 (small plate)
Grouper was moist and fresh, the jam added a sweet pepper taste
Gulf Coast Grouper Sauté:  Island style – With key lime dill butter, capers, and a trickle of pomegranate reduction  $22.00 (small plate)
Moist and fresh with a crisp tart citrus finish
Chocolate Truffle Terrine:  A rich terrine of callebaut bittersweet chocolate $14.00
Award winning, decadently delicious.

The Beach Bistro offers a full bar and ample selection of wines and beer to accompany your meal. We chose a Candor Lot 1 Merlot for our meal.

For the very best places to live or work, in real estate the old saw is “location, location, location,” When it comes to dining, the same can be said for The Beach Bistro.  “Not for the faint at heart” when it comes to pricing, The Beach Bistro is at the top for destination dining.  A spectacular setting complemented by fine food and wine; Gulf coast dining at its best, The Beach Bistro on Anna Maria Island.

Did I mention the setting?

India Palace spices up Main Street....

On one of my frequent walks along Main Street, I noticed that Azteca Mexican Restaurant was closed.  The Mexican restaurant had relocated to Tuttle Avenue and merged to form Mariscos Azteca Mexican Seafood Restaurant. Upon further investigation, I noticed a small sign in the window announcing the planned opening of a new Indian restaurant.  I made a mental note to follow this development, and here’s what I found.

India Palace bills itself as “authentic Indian cuisine.”  While the décor is simple, cozy and very casual; it’s bright, clean, and clearly places the focus on the food.  The setting is perfect for a quick meal with friends, lunch buffet or even a lingering dinner, sharing multiple dishes.  The dining space is small, with tables in close proximity, so at times it might be a tad loud.  However, in my opinion, this cozy dining experience is part of the charm.

The Indian Palace menu is extensive, offering soups, salads, chicken, lamb, goat and seafood, along with vegetarian options.  Specialties include dosa, Tandoor, and biryani.  For our meals, we had the following:

Dosa:  Lentils and rice crepe served with chutney and sambar.  $6.95
A very interesting presentation: crunchy, with delicious dipping sauces. After we finished the crepe, we kept the sauces for naan dipping.
Naan:  Traditional whole wheat bread baked in tandoor.  $.95
Fresh, hot-from-the-oven basket of bread. Nicely colored.
Paneer Kulcha:  Naan stuffed with Panner and baked in tandoor.  $3.95
Fresh baked, light stuffed with cheese, this naan was a hit. Thin and subtle flavor.
Vegetable Samosa Chaat:  Mixed with Samosa, chickpeas, sweet and hot homemade sauces and served with house spices.  $5.95
An inside out type of presentation, everything was mixed on the plate. Flavorful, with a spicy kick.
Mixed Vegetable Pakora:  Fried fresh-cut vegetables, seasoned with special house spices.  $5.95
Lightly battered flavorful veggies — great with chutney.
Gobi Manchuria:  Cauliflower with house spices, coated with cornstarch and deep fried.  $9.95
We are great fans of cauliflower, and this dish did not disappoint. Spicy and flavorful with a good kick to it!
Butter Chicken:  Tender, boneless pieces of tandoori chicken cooked in fresh tomato sauce with a touch of light cream and seasonings.  $1.95
Delicious. We ordered “mild,” and the sauce was silky smooth and flavorful. Real Indian comfort food for me.
Lamb Vindaloo:  Lamb and potatoes, sautéed with a spicy, tangy sauce.  $14.95
If you love the heat of spicy food, this dish is for you. I ordered it medium hot and it was on fire. My mouth is watering recalling the experience as I type this. Delicious, tender, rich and spicy.
Chicken Tikka Masala:  Boneless chicken pre-cooked in Tandoor and house special masala cream with tomato sauce.  $1.95
We had medium spice. A classic rendition. Very flavorful with a nice kick. Creamy, smooth, silky and delicious.
Alu Gobi:  Blend of fresh cauliflower and potatoes sautéed with house spices.  $11.95
Such a wonderful vegetarian combination. This dish is very filling, may also be considered a comfort food; very satisfying.
Lunch Buffet: Every day, all you can eat! $9.95
House Salad:  Iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion, carrot, green chili, lime and lemon.
Fresh, colorful, citrusy, cool, and refreshing.
Onion Pakora:  Onion with chickpea flour, house spices and deep fried.
Nicely battered and deep-fried onions. Tender, full of flavor and great with the spicy tomato chutney.
Mixed Tandoor Kebab:  Tandoori chicken, Chicken Tikka, and malai kebab
A nice mix of boneless chicken pieces with mild flavor. A bit on the dry side, but paired well with chutney.
Goat Curry:  Goat prepared with special sauce from fresh onions, tomatoes, garlic and cloves.
The meat is very tender and the sauce is comfort food. Warning: Watch out for little pieces of bone.
Vegetable Mango:  Vegetable curry sautéed with mango sauce and spices.
Zucchini, carrots, cauliflower, peas, lima beans, string beans and peas. Great combination of earthy and sweet flavors.
Dal Makhani:  Mixed lentils, simmered with Indian butter and house spices.
Thick and creamy. A bit earthy — not one of my favorites, but I might try it again.
Aloo Palak:  Spinach and potatoes.
A very rich, dark green dish with tender pieces of potato. Great combination.
Vegetable Biryani:  Aromatic rice, flavored with garden-fresh vegetables and garnished with raisins and cashews.
Sweet and spicy, the cloves added a good amount of flavor and some heat. A fragrant dish.
Gulab Jamun:  Deep fried milk balls in sweet syrup.
A simple, yet rich, syrupy dessert with great flavor and texture. Can you say “delicious?” Bet you cannot eat just one.

The daily lunch buffet offers a nice representation of menu items with selections changing regularly.  In general, we found all the food to be quite good and very enjoyable.  An intangible attribute I would use to describe the food is “homey.”  There are definitely layers of familiar flavors, but to me there seems to be a “homey” quality which allows the dish to stand out.

The India Palace offers a small selection of beer, wine and soft drinks to accompany your meal.  As for service, it is a little rough around the edges. Although the wait staff is well intentioned, there are some minor service issues we encountered.  Since the restaurant is new, we do expect the service to improve with time and experience.  So, if you are looking for a culinary adventure, perhaps you should consider India Palace.

A New, Unassuming, Tasty, and Inexpensive Dining Experience

The stretch of Washington Boulevard (Rt. 301) running north from Main Street to 17th Street is a real mélange of commerce.  Mostly comprised of small strip mall shopping centers, gas stations, banks, pawn shops, fast food and convenience stores, it would be easy to overlook some of the small ethnic “mom and pop” restaurants sprinkled about the area.  This would be an unfortunate happenstance for those who crave culinary exploration.  Exploring undiscovered, “off the radar,” culinary experiences are not for everyone.  Oft times these “off the radar” spots remain undiscovered for a reason...be it food quality, locale, décor, service, or various other reasons. Nonetheless, every once in a while we come across a place which is worth highlighting; JR Pho is one such place.

Located at 1303 North Washington Boulevard, in the former Amy’s Pho location, JR Pho does have some idiosyncrasies.  Although the name suggests Vietnamese cuisine, which it does offer, the predominant cuisine is Thai.  JR Pho does not offer beer or wine nor does it allow you to “BYOB.”

The menu is extensive offering a range of appetizers, pho, noodle dishes, curries, and soft drinks.  As previously mentioned, both Vietnamese and Thai dishes are offered but Thai seems to be their specialty.  For our meals we chose the following:

Fresh Summer Roll (Goi cuon):  Shredded lettuce, shrimp, roast pork, sweet basil and noodles rolled in fresh rice paper served with peanut sauce.  $3.95
A very fresh, simply flavored roll, nicely presented, one of our “faves.”
Crispy Spring Roll (Chagio):  Deep fried rolls filled with ground chicken and vegetables.  Served with sweet and sour sauce.  $3.95
Four small rolls, simply plated with a delicate sweet and sour sauce.
Banh Mi Thit Ga:  Grilled chicken, cucumber, cilantro, carrot and jalapeno in baguette.  $6.00
Very fresh and flavorful, a simple presentation.
Pho Tai Hoac Chin Nam:  Sliced rare or well done beef, brisket, and rice noodle soup.  $8.50
Good size serving, beef broth was tasty, the meat was a tad fatty; leftovers for lunch the next day were just as good.
Panang, Thai Curry, Chicken:  Thick red curry with bell peppers, carrots, zucchini and basil.  $13.95
A simple presentation, nice curry flavor, spicy but not too hot, tasted great over rice.
Phad Thai Chicken:  Stir fry rice noodles with sweet tamarind sauce, egg, and bean sprouts topped with ground peanuts.  $13.95
Sweet and delicious, tender noodles, subtle peanut taste with hints of basil.
Vegetable Delight:  Seasonal fresh vegetables light stir fry in brown garlic sauce.  $12.95
A very nice medley of fresh and colorful veggies in mild sauce, delicious.

All of the food was served quickly, made to order, and steaming hot.  As mentioned earlier, JR Pho does not served beer or wine but does offer a wide selection of soft drinks and Thai specialty drinks.  The service was very fast and efficient.  Although the décor is very simple and somewhat minimalist, we found the dining area, kitchen, and bathrooms to be very clean and well maintained.  We did notice an active take-out business while we were dining.

If culinary exploration is one of your “things,” and you are a flexible diner, then JR Pho just might be a place you want to try.

Newly Opened LeAnh's Restaurant:  So much more than pho.....

When I first noticed a sign for a newly opened Vietnamese restaurant on the North Trail, I made a mental note to visit. The former Pizza Hut location is now the new home of LeAnh’s Vietnamese Restaurant, which opened early summer of 2013.

When I first arrived, I could not help but notice the décor and atmosphere of LeAnh’s was sparse. Minimalist in surroundings, the staff seemed very friendly and invited us in. My immediate thoughts were, “This is going to be really good or a disaster.”  I am happy to report the experience was really very good.

The menu at LeAnh’s is loaded with an extensive range of authentic Vietnamese dishes. With more than 100 traditional dishes from which to choose, the selection process can be daunting, especially for those unaccustomed to Vietnamese cuisine. With meat, vegetarian, rice, noodle and soup options, one can begin to navigate the menu. But, there is no need to struggle; the staff can guide you through the selection process just by asking a few questions. For our meals, we chose the following:

Chi Gio:  Fried egg rolls.  $3.50
Two crunchy thin rolls with a slightly salty fish sauce.
Fresh Rolls:  Rice paper wrapped with shrimp, pork, lettuce, rice vermicelli, mint leaves and side of peanut sauce.  $3.50
One of our faves — fresh, colorful and full of flavor, with a very nice peanut sauce.
Goi Du Du Tom:  Shrimp with papaya salad, topped with peanuts.  $8.95
A fresh, crunchy salad  full of flavors, colors and textures — very refreshing.
Pho Chicken Soup:  Chicken rice noodle soup.  $7.95
A Vietnamese classic: Rich, soothing broth, noodles served with beansprouts, fresh basil, lime and jalapeno pepper, which allows you to adjust the spice as you prefer.
Gio Xao Hanh Gong:  Chicken, stir fried with ginger and scallion.  $9.95
A ginger-lover’s delight — slightly spicy, full of ginger flavor. Large portion can easily be shared.
Goi Ga:  Chicken with cabbage salad, topped with peanuts.  $8.95
Big portion is a meal unto itself.  Crunchy, with a nice mix of flavors, a little bit of tang. Refreshing.
Banh Hoi Ga Nuong:  Grilled chicken on thin rice stick bunches.  $8.95
A very flavorful, interesting dish. Nice mild flavor with a crunch from the rice bunch.
Hu Tieu Hoac Mi Xao:  Rice or egg noodle stir fry, with combination of shrimp, squid pork, chicken and vegetables.  $10.50 (We chose rice.)
A great combination of seafood, flavors, colors and textures.

With the exception of the egg and fresh rolls, all of the portions are large and can be easily shared by two people. The wait staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in explaining or recommending specific dishes. There is a limited, but adequate, selection of beer, wine, and soft drinks to accompany your meal.

The old adage “Never judge a book by its cover” certainly applies here.  While the décor at LeAnh’s may be minimalist, the food is definitely not. If décor and ambiance are important factors to your dining experience, this is not the place for you. However, if authentic, home-styled, Vietnamese cuisine wakes up your taste buds, then LeAnh’s is a place you need to try.

Yesteryear charm with today’s food!

Picture a 1850’s styled train station painstakingly disassembled, moved, and restored in Sarasota’s Rosemary district.  An interesting venue for a restaurant!  Charming, colorful, warm and inviting, that is Station 400.

When we first arrived at Station 400, we were greeted with a friendly smile and promptly seated.  We particularly liked the variety of seating options, and choose to sit in the small room just adjacent to the large outdoor area. Bright and cheerful, we studied the menu and were impressed with the offerings.  We chose the following:

Curry Chicken Wrap:  Green apple, arugula, toasted almonds, melted brie  $9.00
Mild in spice, but full of flavor…this could become a “fave.”
Cuban Press Sandwich:  Slow roasted pork, ham, swiss, grain mustard, pickle  $9.25
Warm, sweet and gooey; just the way I like it!

All sandwiches are served with a choice of parmesan fries, potato salad, orzo pasta salad or tomato cucumber salad.  We chose the parmesan fries which were crispy and delicious.  It should be noted Station 400 is committed to sourcing the finest in local ingredients, and it shows in the flavors and colors of the food.

If you are looking for a new breakfast or lunch spot with a touch of yesteryear that has both indoor and outdoor dining, try Station 400.  You will not be disappointed.

A simply focused whole foods menu results in simply delicious food!

On the South Trail tucked away in a Sarasota strip mall, the unassuming Simon’s Coffee House is bustling with lunchtime activity.  Names being added to the wait list, waitresses moving about with fresh food, multiple rooms and outdoor dining all filled with various sized groups talking and enjoying their food.

Rather than wait for an indoor table, we chose to have our lunch outside.  Even though outdoor dining only offers a view of the parking lot accompanied by the sound of traffic from Rt. 41, it was not a deterrent to our enjoyment of the meal.

At Simon’s the focus is on serving healthy high quality food and drinks.  A limited menu (soups, sandwiches, and salads) of simply prepared food with high quality ingredients and freshly prepared daily specials provides the diner with a choice which is interesting, healthy, and not overwhelming.  We chose the following:

Chicken Salad:  chicken breast, celery, apples, walnuts, grapes, mayo, on our House salad.  $8.75.
A sweet and crunchy chicken salad served on a bed of crisp greens and accompanied with an outstanding piece of multi-grain bread; truly delicious.
Balboa Panini Special:  rosemary ham, asparagus, tomato, mozzarella cheese, salad greens.  With choice of salad or soup.  $9.95
Toasty, crunchy bread with perfectly matched ingredients: ham and asparagus, cheese and tomato served with the right amount of “melt”.

Simon’s offers a broad selection of drinks (Health drinks, Smoothies and shakes, teas, juices, soda, lemonade, beer and wine) to accompany your meal.  We choose the Arnold Palmer $4.50 and iced herbal tea $1.95.

Although our waitress was friendly, courteous and prompt, we were not offered any refills on our tea (which we thought was a bit odd) and at times we felt slightly rushed.

If you are looking for a healthy, slightly different alternative to the everyday lunch or breakfast, then Simon’s Coffee House is the place for you.

Libby's Café & Bar: A Standout in Southside Village......

When I think of Libby’s, one word that always comes to mind is choice.  This concept of choice extends well beyond the selections on the menu.  In fact, Libby’s offers a wide range of dining options: indoor and outdoor seating, two good-sized bar areas, a value priced menu for early dining, happy hour, Sunday brunch, lunch and an extensive, seasonally updated dinner menu.  Suffice it to say, Libby’s can accommodate many individual preferences for dining.

Located at 1917 South Osprey Avenue, the setting is casually upscale with white-clothed tables, wood panels, high ceilings and indoor and outdoor seating, it’s bright and airy; think American bistro.  Although the physical setting is large, the ambience is cozy with an exciting auditory buzz in the background.

As previously mentioned, the seasonally updated menu at Libby’s is large, which can accommodate most people’s preferences.  For our meals, we chose the following:

A Nice Little House Salad:  Organic greens, cucumber, marinated grape tomatoes, ricotta salata, golden balsamic.  $6
The name says it all. Fresh greens nicely presented, perfect size for a side salad.
Grilled Sustainable Salmon Salad: Organic greens, wakame, thin veggies, ginger-miso dressing $14
Salmon was grilled perfectly. The salad was fresh with the addition of cabbage, carrots and peppers for a nice crunch.
5 & Dime Lunch:  Choose one of five lunch selections for $10 served with your choice of small house or Caesar salad or cup of tomato soup.  $10
Classic cheeseburger: LCB pickles, house chips.  $10
A traditional choice, with a thin, soft cheeseburger bun; it’s the perfect size for those looking for a light lunch.
Half-Pound Prime Hamburger:  Caramelized onions, blue cheese, truffle Parmesan fries.  $12
This is the real-deal burger, thick and juicy, a great combination of sweet caramelized onions with the tangy creamy bite of blue cheese; my mouth is watering from this write-up.
Famous Iceberg Wedge: Prosciutto, Moody blue cheese, Applewood bacon, cherry tomatoes, onion rings.  $9 / $17 (Enough to share)
A great presentation of a signature salad. Large, colorful, fresh, full of flavor; could be a meal on its own.
Grilled Boneless Rainbow Trout Amaretto Almondine:  Wilted spinach, Fuji apples, dried cherries, Fuji apple vinaigrette.  $23
Excellent, layers of flavors, sweet cherries, tart apples, savory sauce, fresh trout. Simple and elegant.
Seared Ahi Tuna Steak: Kimchi fried rice, edamame, sweet peas, tempura flakes, Thai ginger-mango glaze.  $26
Asian influenced all the way with a great mix of flavors — spicy, sweet, tangy, with a little crunch.
Dutch Baby:  Libby’s classic baked-to-order caramel-apple cake with cinnamon ice cream: $10
This is a must-try for dessert. Although I am partial to chocolate, this moist, rich cake is perfectly topped by the creamy, cool cinnamon ice cream. Loved it!
Warm Drunken Peach Crostata:  Almond paste, Amaretti crunch, vanilla bean ice cream, honey caramel: $10
A great mix of flavors and textures; sweet and creamy with a nice little crunch.

In addition to its full bar service, Libby’s offers a large selection of beer (draft and bottle), wine and soft drinks to accompany your meal.  The service staff is quite friendly; staff members offer menu suggestions, quickly take your drink orders, yet allow you the time to make your food selection.  All meals were nicely plated, served at appropriate temperature and delivered without an unreasonable wait.

Sarasota has its share of many fine restaurants; being a standout is not an easy accomplishment.  Yet, Libby’s seems to make it happen with aplomb.  So, if you are looking for that perfect place that can accommodate particular palates and diverse dining preferences, visit Libby’s Café + Bar; a standout in Southside Village.

Offering a wide range of choices in dining, venue, and price range, Libby’s has become one of our “go to” places. To read our “Friday Faves” blog post about Libby’s click here

A Downtown Diner Reminiscent of Simpler Times

One step inside Sarasota’s Coffee Carrousel (sic) and you will swear you took a step back in time.  An “old school” diner with Formica counter, vinyl tiled flooring, basic table and chairs, and even a manual cash register, the current owners of the Coffee Carrousel began serving breakfast and lunch to the Sarasota community in July, 1987.  Dare I say few things have changed over that period?

As one would expect, the simple décor is reflective of the menu options.  Standard breakfast and lunch items served in a no frills way, with prices which are also reminiscent of a bygone time.  For our meals we chose the following:

One Egg:  Served with choice of pan fries, hash browns, or grits, toast and coffee.  $2.75
Cooked just the way I ordered it, you add the extra butter in the grits or not...I like making those choices. The entire breakfast is the price of a cup of coffee in many restaurants!
Three Egg Cheese Omelet:  Choice of American or Swiss cheese. Served with choice of pan fries, hash brown, or grits and toast. $3.90
Griddle styled omelet, flat and folded served with flavorful pan fries.
Chicken Salad Sandwich Platter:  Chicken salad sandwich with French fries and cole slaw. $3.70 (sandwich) $1.75 (platter) $.15 slice of tomato
Tasty, basic chicken salad sandwich, good cole slaw.
Combo Plate:  Chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad on a bed of lettuce with tomato and cucumber. $5.75
Egg salad was unavailable substituted pickled beets, fresh, tasty, just the right amount of food.

The Coffee Carrousel offers a range of soft drinks, coffee, and tea to accompany your meals.  We found the wait staff to be very friendly, attentive, and efficient.

The Coffee Carrousel a perfect place for a simple, no frills breakfast and lunch which is easy on your waistline and wallet!
